about

In the summer of 2018 an overheard conversation in Claypath Deli, Durham City became the catalyst for a partnership between the northeast music community and the world of mental health interventions. Over coffee the co-founders of RTProjects (Beano and Emma) told live music promoter DownByTheRiver that they believe there is an alternative to pharmaceutical interventions for people who experience depression and/or anxiety related symptoms; they went on to explain that in 2007 they set up an art studio in Gilesgate, Durham.

‘Open Art Surgery’ says the sign above the door and that is where Beano and Emma use art to save lives. For the last twelve years they have soldiered on but like many vital services these days, the austerity-driven policies of central government has made funding their project a major challenge. Hence, that chance meeting sparked a creative alliance in order to generate some much-needed funding for RTProjects.

DownByTheRiver subsequently approached several musicians they had worked with and asked them to donate a track to a compilation album with all money generated being donated directly to RTProjects.

Furthermore, social activist and critically acclaimed musician Steve Pledger got together with Beano to record a track especially for the album. That track, entitled What if? became the albums title track.

What if? was written from Beano’s own experience and as he explains ‘the whole point of RTProjects is to save lives using art and this track is an extension of that philosophy - perhaps my words can somehow reach someone, somewhere who may be desperate and give them hope that their situation can get better’.
